I have made a lot of magic tonies, or tonies that have the chip from a creative tonie taken out and put in another design. The most common question I get is- how do I get the chips out without breaking them? The short answer is practice, but the long answer is that some are easier than others. My goal with this guide is to give you a head start, with pictures and ideas on how to get to these chips, and I give an idea of how easy they are to remove for each type of tonie.

Note, I’ve removed thousands of these chips. So when I give an idea of how hard it is for me to do, if you’re a beginner, you’ll probably break significantly more. I personally broke my first 2 chips on ones that I consider pretty easy to remove now. The goal of this guide is to give you a more informed starting point.

If you’re making these magic tonies for yourself, I don’t recommend getting all the same type of creative tonie. Then it’ll all look the same in your tonies app, and will make managing or updating them more time consuming and confusing. You are able to change the names of creative tonies in the advanced settings, but its a best practice to have them look different as well. Not necessary, but it helps.

Good chips and bad chips

There are 2 different types of chips that can be inside creative tonies. The ones that have copper on only about 1/3 of it, and one that has copper on most of it. The one with less copper is significantly more fragile. Not only is it more fragile, but they are also harder to solder back together if you break one. Can they still be removed? Yes. But even with all my experience taking them out, I’m about 24x more likely to break one with the bad chip (I actually did the math).

Good Chip Tonies

  • Jumpsuit
  • Yeti
  • Santa
  • Wizard
  • Vampire
  • Singer
  • Hero (this one has other challenges, but the chip is good)

Bad Chip Tonies

  • Fairy
  • Monster
  • Mermaid
  • Pirate

All of these chips are found in the neck of the tonie, once the head is removed. That said, I’m not going into details on these because you should not try to turn these into magic tonies. They’re a pain, and too fragile. Avoid these. If you’ve already bought one, return it.

Universal steps for removing chips from all tonies

The first thing you want to do is to heat them up. I personally like to boil them. I’ve tried baking them, and they let off some nasty fumes. I don’t know how toxic that is, so do it at your own risk. Boiling them is the tried and true method. The chips in them are technically RFID tags, not an electronic chip, so water will not hurt the chips. I boil the creative tonies for 10-15 minutes before starting to work on them.

Note, if the chip isn’t coming out easily, do not try to pry it out. I just put it right back in the pot of boiling water and give it more time. The heat and water soften things up and usually they’ll come out. Using metal tools, like a screw driver or butter knife, to pry out the chips will significantly increase the likelihood that you’ll damage the chip.

Jumpsuit Tonie

This is the most common creative tonie. It’s not hard to get the chip or magnet out of this one. The other really nice thing with this is that there are a ton of different colors and different skin tones as well, which means there are around 20 different color options for this.

To remove the chip, carefully pry the face off the tonie after it has boiled about 10-15 minutes. Then, I like to squish the face to open up the void the chip is in to get them out. You don’t want to try to pry them out with anything metal. If I can’t get it out with my fingers, I put them back in the pot to heat them back up some more.

I break about 2% of these chips. (The all white, paintable ones I tend to break about 3% of those chips. I don’t know if they use more glue, or if the glue just adheres to the white plastic/rubber of the tonie better, but I tend to try to avoid them. That said, Target occasionally has this one on sale, so I will still buy them on occasion)

Yeti tonie

This one is occasionally on sale for a really good deal, and when that happens I always buy. This one is my favorite to get the chip out of. The head pops off and the chip is right there. That said, the glue can stick to the white more, and I will occasionally get some of the rubber of the Tonie that sticks to the chip as I remove it. That’s not a big deal.

The long body does make it a bit more challenging to get the magnets out though. It’s not super hard, but the long tubes are a bit more challenging. I use a longer screw driver to get them out, but it can often take a couple tries to get the magnets out. I always get the magnets out, but it adds a little bit of time.

As a professional I break about 1% of these chips.

Singer tonie

This is at the same time one of the easiest and yet still frustrating. This one has a little capsule that has the magnet and chip inside of it. The capsule only has one magnet, which is a little bit of a downgrade. Additionally, the magnets are also sometimes impossible to get out of the plastic capsule. After some practice, I can get about half of them out. That said, the magnets used in tonies is a 6mm x 6mm rounded magnet. They’re pretty cheap on amazon. All my designs use 2 magnets, so if I get this creative tonie, I plan to buy magnets for it, so I account for that when comparing costs. BUT if you don’t want to deal with magnets and chips, the capsule can be inserted into whatever you’re building, and that works pretty well. The finish isn’t as good as what I’m going for, but its good. To remove the capsule, simply pull it out using needle nose pliers after you’ve boiled it for about 10 minutes.

This is one you’re probably least likely to break. I don’t like them because it takes too much time to remove the chip from the capsule, and I like getting 2 magnets. Still, I’ve never broken one of these chips.

Santa tonie

This one also only has one magnet. The magnet is in a capsule, but the chip isn’t. This one isn’t terrible, but its not one of my favorites to do. The rubber is slightly softer than the jumpsuit tonie. Because of that, you don’t want to overcook these, or it’ll get almost too soft to work with. I’m also not a fan of it only having 1 magnet, and with it being in a capsule, I can’t use them in my designs unless I cut them out, and that’s a pain. I break about 2% of these.

Wizard

This chip is found inside the neck once you remove the head. This one also has softer rubber than the jumpsuit tonie, so you’ll want to avoid over cooking this one as well. Like the santa, this one also has a single magnet inside a capsule. I don’t usually buy these for that reason. I really like my 2 magnets. That said, this is one of the easier ones to remove. I’d say I only break about 1.5% of these.

Vampire

Like many of the others, the chip on this one is in the back of the neck once you take the head off. This one has a lot of good things going for it. It has the good chip, it has 2 magnets, and its not too terribly difficult to take apart. The challenging part of this one is that its got the softer rubber, and the rubber is black, so it absorbs the heat even more than the others. I often end up with lots of the rubber sticking to the chip when I remove them from these tonies. That said, I only break about 1.5% of these. They’re not my favorite, but I wouldn’t NOT buy them if they were on sale.

Hero

I am not a fan of the hero tonie. The body comes out in a couple of pieces, and the chip is embedded in the head. You are more likely to break these chips trying to dig them out of the head than you are with other tonies. I haven’t done many of these for that reason, and the ones I have done, I cut the head open to get the chip out, giving a lot of space around the chip to avoid damaging it. It took a lot of time, and its a higher risk tonie. I would probably avoid these ones. They’re not as bad as the tonies that have the other kind of chip, but I don’t think I’d buy these ones, even if they were on sale. I haven’t done enough of these tonies to give an idea, but I’d say I probably would break about 5% of these ones.

Disneyland Tonie with a Toniebox

We want to make it easy for you to find good wholesome content for your Disneyland Tonies, so we put together this resource to help you. There are a lot of options out there, but we know it can be intimidating to get started. We have put together this list to help you find some ideas, some free content options, and suggestions for personal messages you might want to record to put on your Disneyland Tonies. Most of the good audio content you’d want for this is copyrighted. As is my goal, I try to find some free options on the internet as well, and that’s what I try to start with for people.

Internet Archive: Disney Avenue

Someone posted a lot of the old Disneyland background music to Internet Archive. What does that mean? It’s free. It can add some fun nostalgia to your Tonie, though a number of these might not be familiar to your kids. A lot of these tracks are long. Like 30-50 minutes long. You might want to use an audio editing tool like Audacity to shorten it. There are some actual, more normal length songs that we liked. Some to get you started:

  • Yo Ho (A Pirates Life For Me)
  • Mainstreet USA

Top Albums for Disneyland Tonie

This is where you’re primarily going to get your best stuff. The legacy collection has more of the classic music. The 70th anniversary soundtrack has some more modern songs that are fun, but they weren’t the ones I immediately thought of when I thought of Disneyland.

Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection: Disneyland

Convert Old Disney CDs

If you’re like me, you probably have 5 or 6 Disney CDs from your childhood on a shelf or in a box somewhere. The problem most of us have- most computers don’t have a disk drive any more. I used to keep an old laptop that had a CD drive on it for ripping music, but at this point, that laptop is completely outdated.

I bought a simple Dell option on Amazon. I don’t have any brand loyalty to Dell. It just had the highest reviews and the most purchases, so it felt like the safest option. Price was on par with the others I looked at as well.

We plan to keep adding content to these pages as we find other good resources. If you have good suggestions, the best way to reach us, so we don’t get bogged down with spam emails, is through the chat feature on either our Instagram, Facebook, or our Etsy page.

We know there are ways to rip audio files from YouTube videos, or from other online content. We share this information because some content on those sites have creative commons licenses. We don’t teach how to do this because we do not condone any violations of copyright laws. Use any content from these sites at your own risk.

Tonie’s are little characters that play on a Toniebox. It’s kind of like a CD or playlist that’s on a character that plays stories or music for kids. This post looks into creative Tonies, how they’re made, and why they’re cool. A creative Tonie is a character that is a blank slate. You are able to put whatever you want on it, up to 90 minutes of content. Additionally, you’re able to change the content whenever you want via the app. In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to make a creative Tonie, decorate or customize it, and upload custom content in a few simple steps.

What is a Creative Tonie?

Creative Tonies are blank, customizable figurines made to work with the Toniebox. Unlike the pre-loaded Tonies that come with professionally recorded content, Creative Tonies allow you to upload your own audio files. The options and opportunities with these are endless and open up a world of possibilities!

Blue Creative Tonie
White paintable custom creative tonie for making magic tonies

Supplies You’ll Need

  • A Creative Tonie
  • Toniebox
  • Tonie app
  • Wi-Fi connection
  • Audio files or
  • Audio recording tool (like the voice recorder on your phone)
  • Audio editing tools, like Audacity or GarageBand, are also helpful, but not required.

As far as the creative tonie’s themselves go, there are a few generic options out there that you can buy from places like Target or Amazon. These little figurines look like characters. There are other options to create a “magic” creative Tonie, which is a Tonie with a completely custom look. Shameless plug- we sell a few options that are more aligned with content that isn’t available from standard Tonie characters, such as patriotic or religious content.

Planning Your Content

It helps to have an idea in mind for content before you buy your creative tonie. Ideas include:

  • Music
  • Audio books and stories
  • Children’s podcasts
  • Recorded messages from parents
  • Recorded stories from grandparents or loved ones
  • Educational content
  • And more!

To try to make things easier for people, we actually create some content suggestions for some of the custom Tonies that we make. You can find what we use on our Tonie Content Suggestions page.

Recording and Editing Audio

Recording content or finding content to use isn’t as hard as you might think. If you don’t want to use something pre-recorded, you can use your phone’s voice recorder, or an app like Audacity to create your own mp3 media files.

We know there are ways to rip audio files from YouTube videos, or from other online content. We share this information because some content on those sites have creative commons licenses. We don’t teach how to do this because we do not condone any violations of copyright laws, as is most common with using these methods. Use any content from these sites at your own risk.

Uploading Audio to Your Creative Tonie

Once your files are ready:

  1. Open the Tonie app and sign in.
  2. Select your Creative Tonie from your library.
  3. Tap “Edit Content” and upload your MP3 files.
  4. Sync your Toniebox (place the Creative Tonie on it while connected to Wi-Fi).
  5. Wait for the LED light to turn green—your content is now ready to play!

Troubleshooting tip: If syncing doesn’t work, check that your Toniebox is connected to Wi-Fi and that the files are the correct format and size.

FAQs about Creative Tonies

Can I use a creative Tonie programed by someone else?

Yes, you can play the content on a creative that was made by someone else, but you cannot edit the content on it. We have heard of instances where some folks were able to contact Tonie’s support and get the creative “unlocked” so they can access it, but I’ve also heard of people who have had these requests denied.

Am I able to change the content on my Creative Tonie?

Yes, you can change the content on your Creative Tonie as often as you’d like. I know of people who update their content weekly for their children.

How long can my Creative Tonie play?

You can upload up to 90 minutes of content to your creative.

What format do I need for audio files?

The creative Tonie uses MP3 or MP4A formats.

Conclusion

Creative Tonies open up a world of possibilities for parents, grandparents, and anyone looking to share meaningful, personalized content with the little ones in their lives. Whether you’re uploading bedtime stories, family messages, or fun educational tracks, the ability to craft something unique makes these Tonies more than just toys—they become cherished memory-makers.

With just a little effort and creativity, you can turn a blank figurine into a custom character that delights your child day after day. From recording your own audio to decorating a one-of-a-kind figure, the process is simple, fun, and incredibly rewarding.

Whether you’re here to learn, get inspired, or pick up one of our themed Creative Tonies, we hope this guide helps you bring your ideas to life. Be sure to check out our Etsy shop for custom designs and our Content Suggestions page for ready-to-go ideas and inspiration.

Happy creating, and happy listening!

Making a custom Magic Tonie

Want to learn how to make a custom Magic Tonie that’s one-of-a-kind? Whether you’re trying to create the perfect bedtime storyteller, a personalized gift, or just a fun DIY project for your kids, making a custom Magic Tonie is easier than you think. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to make a custom Magic Tonie using a few different methods—from quick plug-and-play options to more advanced DIY hacks. Let’s dive in and turn your Toniebox into something truly magical.

TL;DR: 4 Ways to Make a Custom Magic Tonie

  • Buy a premade custom creative one on Etsy
  • Use a Magic Tonie puck and attach a toy
  • Paint a blank Creative Tonie
  • Extract the chip and DIY your own figure

(More details on all of these below)

What is a Magic Tonie?

A Magic Tonie is a special kind of figure used with the Toniebox. What makes it special? This isn’t a tonie character available to the masses. This is a DIY tonie, that can be any character you want. A Magic Tonie uses a creative tonie chip, which makes it unique because it can hold custom recordings. Instead of just playing pre-recorded content like other Tonies, a Magic Tonie lets you or your family record or program your own messages, favorite stories, or songs you have the MP3 for.

How Do You Make a Custom Magic Tonie?

4 options- I have these ranked from easiest to hardest.

  1. Buy a premade custom tonie
  2. Buy a magic tonie puck and glue a toy to it
  3. Buy a creative tonie and paint it
  4. Remove the chip from a creative tonie and put it in a toy or other character you make

Option 1: Buy a Premade Custom Tonie (Fastest & Easiest!)

There are several sellers that make Tonie characters that aren’t available from the tonie company. Characters like Jesus, Bluey, and Miss Rachel. You can find a lot of different unique options on etsy. These are almost all made with blank creative tonie chips that you can program yourself. Shameless plug- we sell our own designs on etsy as well, and are constantly working to make new designs, so feel free to check out our custom Magic Tonies on Etsy

Option 2: Make a Custom Tonie with a Magic Tonie Base (Puck)

We sell these, and others on Etsy sell them as well. It’s just what it sounds like. It’s essentially a round cylindrical base that already has the chip and magnets inside of it. Then you can glue whatever toy or figurine you want to that platform to make it your own personalized Tonie figure. These also have the creative Tonie chips inside of them. Extracting these chips can be hard, and has risk, as I get into below in more detail. Buying this “puck” or base takes the risk out of it for you. These are cheaper than fully made custom Tonie characters.

Option 3: Buy and Paint a Creative Tonie

If you go this route, I recommend buying one of the all white creative tonies. This gives you a lot more options, and you don’t have to worry about inconsistencies in your paint job. These can be fun for kids to paint as well. What’s nice with these- they look on brand with the tonie brand, because they’re made and sold by the tonie company. I’ve seen artists put out some really cool painted designs. My favorites were a Mario and a Ms. Rachel version I saw someone else make. That said, you’re really limited by the shape of these, in terms of what you can get one of these to look like. It’ll be in the shape of that little character. We bought several of these white ones on Amazon when they went on sale about a month ago from when I’m writing this.

White paintable custom creative tonie for making magic tonies

Option 4: Removing a Chip From a Creative Tonie and Making Your Own

This option has a fair amount of risk. I actually broke the first chip I tried to extract from a creative tonie. That was super discouraging. The risk of breaking them is always there. I’ve gotten a lot better over time at getting them out. I put together a walkthrough of how I do it, and some tips and tricks that will increase your chances of getting the chip out in one functional piece. That said, I still occasionally break one. As someone who has DIY’d a lot of these, I can attest, its not foolproof.

Step-by-Step: How to Make a Custom Magic Tonie by Removing the Chip (Advanced)

Boil your entire creative Tonie for 8 minutes. You just take it out of the package and put it in the water. The chips are RFID, so it’s not a problem if they get wet. I usually bring water to a boil, then dump in the Tonies to make my Tonie soup.

boiling creative Tonies to get the chip out to make magic Tonies

After they’ve boiled for at least 8 minutes, you can pry off the face with a screw driver. There are 2 little rubber nubs that are kind of like a lego, securing the face to the tonie.

Chip from a custom creative tonie

Don’t try to pry out the chip with a screwdriver. You’ll want to. You’ll see it right there and you’ll think you can dig it out. Don’t. That’s how you break chips. So how do you get them out? After you get the face off, I like to squish the face in between my fingers in a way that opens up the cavity that holds the chip. If the glue is soft enough, it’ll almost fall right out, or you’ll be able to gently pull it out with your fingers.

If it isn’t just popping out at this point, put the face back in the boiling water. This will soften up the glue. The other thing you’ll want to know, some creative Tonies are easier to get the chip out than others. The secret? Darker skinned creative Tonies.

This isn’t about race–it’s a heat transfer thing. Probably. My working theory is that the darker skin absorbs heat easier. Either way, from what I’ve seen, the glue softens a lot easier on the darker skinned Creatives. I’ve pulled chips out of a lot of Tonies. It’s been noticeably easier with the darker ones.

Darker skinned creative Tonie

Next, when you’re putting the chips into your custom magic Tonie, the chips need to be vertical. They don’t work if they’re even a little bit at an angle. Make sure they’re aligned straight up and down.

Creative Tonie Chips Quick Facts:

  • Dimensions: 11mmx3.7-4mm
  • Technology: RFID
  • Material: A steel core wrapped in copper wire, sawdered on one end of the cylinder.
  • How its secured to the creative Tonie: A circle of a dark glue

Frequently Asked Questions About Magic Tonies

Can I bake the creative Tonies instead of boiling them?

Yes, I’ve seen several creators opt to bake their tonies instead of boiling. I personally prefer boiling. They heat up faster, and there isn’t a risk of getting them too hot.

Is it safe to boil a Tonie figure?

I’ve boiled literally hundreds of them. Yes, its just fine. There are not any batteries or other electrical components that will short out from doing this.

Will my custom Tonie work on all Tonieboxes?

Yes, it should. That said, if you give away your custom magic Tonie to another person, they won’t be able to change the content if you’ve already uploaded content onto it.

Schoolhouse Rock

If you didn’t grow up with Schoolhouse Rock, did you really even get an education? These were old when I saw them. But these are absolute classics. I love them. I still catch myself singing I’m Just a Bill, yes I’m only a bill, every now and then. Here are some relevant ones to consider. Note- these are videos, but with a google search you’ll find that there are lots of options online for converting video files to mp3s.

  • No More Kings
  • The Shot Heard Round the World
  • The Preamble
  • I’m Just a Bill
  • The 3 Ring Government

Patriotic Kids Songs

This is an album that’s about 45 minutes long, and includes some good classics. It’s a little more modern than Schoolhouse Rock. There are about a dozen songs on the album, but the ones that took me back to my childhood were:

  • God Bless the USA
  • Fifty Nifty United States
  • You’re a Grand Old Flag
  • Home on the Range

60 Second Civics Podcast

This one is a little more advanced and not necessarily made with small children in mind. If your kids are precocious or a little older, this will keep them interested. I read there are ways you can download these podcasts using the tunein app. I also read there are other tools you can use to download from tunein. Use google to find those, and use them at your own risk. I haven’t tried it yet. My kids are about 5 years too young for this. Titles include Prime Minister vs President, and Congress Can Limit the President’s Power. More advanced stuff, but very educational.

The Pledge of Allegiance

This pledge of allegiance is recited and explained by the late great John Wayne. It’s just over 4 minutes long, and its good for most kids. And best of all, its free.

Hope of America

I grew up singing these songs. I think it was more a regional program, so if you didn’t grow up in the west, you probably aren’t familiar with them. There are 10 tracks on this album. I haven’t found a free version of it yet on the internet, but its not terribly expensive (not an affiliate link, I just like it), and for nostalgia, I have to share this one.

Conference Talks

This one is definitely for older kids, but there are a lot of great conference talks about the Book of Mormon. My personal favorite is the talk by Elder Holland from 2009, Safety For the Soul, which is his testimony of the Book of Mormon. It is one of the most powerful talks I’ve ever heard. You can download any conference talks from the Church’s website, but that one in particular can be found here.
